Generation Next: American Goalkeepers

The Generation Next series will highlight the top 5 American prospects at each position. Today’s series looks at goalkeepers. Be sure to check back tomorrow for right backs.

American goalkeeping has always been strong. The names Meola, Keller, Friedel, and Howard are legendary.  Which keeper will wear the #1 jersey down the road? Here are the top five goalkeeping prospects:

1. Chris Seitz, 22, Real Salt Lake

The former Maryland product was drafted 4th in the 2007 Super Draft. He has looked good in limited action this season, making three starts with a 1.67 GAA and six saves. His biggest hindrance to his development has been a lack of playing time.

2.  Earl Edwards, 17, US U-17 National Team

He stands at 6’3 and is still growing. He is a natural athlete who has been very impressive during U-17 play. He gained fame with back-to-back shutouts of Brazil and Russia. He has quick reflexes and is able to read the game very well for a young player.

3. Danny Cepero, 24, New York Red Bulls

He is the elder of the group. He has shown the ability to make amazing saves but consistency has been an issue. He gained invaluable experience during last year’s MLS playoff run. Playing time will become an issue after the Redbulls signed Bouna Coundoul.

4. Josh Lambo, 18, FC Dallas

The Generation Adidas standout has yet to appear in a FC Dallas game, but has played extensively for youth national teams. He is expected to be named to the U-20 World Cup squad, where he could earn the starting position. He stands at only 6’0, but is still young enough to hit a growth spurt.

5. Tyler Deric, 20 Houston Dynamo

He became the second home-grown player to sign with a MLS club. He has good size and will be training with one of the best goalkeepers in the history of the league. He was named to the ACC All-Freshman team during a brief stint at UNC.

Honorable Mention:

Dominic Cervi, 22, Celtic FC
Zack MacMath, 17, Maryland
Brian Perk, 18, UCLA
Bobby Shuttleworth, 22, New England Revolution
